Site Pages
In Webonizer there is a terminology called “Site Page”. A site page is an all-purpose general document that can be used as a web page or content for specific points in a website program. For example, the content on most Webonizer-enabled websites is partially stored in a Site Page called “Home”. The “static” part of the page is part of the Site Page called “Home”.
Administrators of a Webonizer site must learn the options in a site page to be able to understand how the different areas on a site are related. What makes a Site Page important is that they are the basic building block of your site’s different areas. An analogy is to think of a site page as a department and your site the whole store. Each site page can become the core of an area of your site.
Site pages can become main areas under which you can create topics. If you turn on the “Articles” flag in a Site Page control panel, you can create topics under that site page that specific articles can be attached to. So you might make a site page called “Friends” and under it create several topics such as “Friend Stories”, “Friend Photos” and “Friend Poems”.
Once created, you can edit the various attributes of a site page by clicking on it in the “Site Pages” link available to administrators of a Webonizer site. You can also create new Site Pages by clicking on “Make Site Page” on the Site Pages Administration or in the site links when logged in as an administrator.
A description of all the key features of site pages is listed below:
Basic Information
- Title
- Your title is the title of your site page as it will appear in your HTML title. This field is required and has a maximum of 96 characters. You may not use HTML in this field… and you should refrain from using single quotes(“). For SEO purposes, you should keep your title to four words or less.
- Link Name
- NOTE: No two pages should have the same link name. In most versions of Webonizer the database will not allow you to enter the same name twice—but if your version is not forcing unique Link Names, you must be careful not to use the same name twice. Also, if you ever change a Link Name, the address to the page will change, meaning that Search Engines that have already indexed your site may send visitors to the wrong page. The link name is an important SEO field that bears some consideration. Your link name will appear in the URL for this page; it will also appear in the navigation menu to get to this page if your site settings are generating the auto-navigation menu. For example, your title might be “Photos of Cats on My Site”… and your link name might be “Cat Photos”. If so—“Cat_Photos” will appear in the URL for the page and your navigation menu will have a link labeled “Cat Photos”. (Webonizer will automatically convert spaces to an underscore in your link name). You cannot use HTML in your Link Name, and it can be a maximum of 16 characters.
- Description
- Your description is a one or two sentence description about this page (and an overview of the kinds of topics that this page will display). It will appear in your HTML’s description meta tag and in search engine results. You may not use HTML in this field and it has a maximum of 250 characters.
- Keywords
- This is a comma-separated list of keywords about this page. This field fills the keyword meta tag of your web page. You may not use HTML. Maximum of 250 characters.
Page Settings
The fields in Page Settings deal with the functionality of a site page. You can ignore these fields if you simply want to create a basic HTML page.
- Group Class [deprecated]
- Option removed as of Webonizer 1.6. This field is for creating membership classes for members of the site. You should generally leave this field blank or upgrade your site to the latest version of Webonizer.
- Link Type
- NOTE: This assumes that you are using the default Webonizer template system. If your site template is customized, you may need to refer to your web master to configure link placement. This field will tell Webonizer where to place links to this page on the site’s default template. For example, if you choose “Top Navigation” a link to this page will automatically appear in the navigation menu. If you put the Link Type to “Right” the page will be linked in the right pane of every page. The page will not appear as a link if you select “None”.
- Page Restriction
- This menu decides who can view this page. If your restriction is set to “None” then anyone can view this page. If set to “Members” it can be viewed by any member of the site when logged in. If set to “Admin”, it can only be viewed by administrators of the site when they are logged in.
- Has Articles
- Set this to true if you want this page to have topics and articles attached to it. If you set this flag to false, the page cannot have topics or articles.
- Full HTML
- This checkbox will determine how Webonizer presents the content that is created with the fields below. If unchecked, all line breaks are converted to HTML breaks
<br/>. If checked, you will be responsible for creating breaks with HTML.
Page Content
- Primary Content (formerly labeled Body)
- This content will fill the body of your page. You may use HTML.
- Text Tools
- If you are using Internet Explorer you will see Text HTML tools. This tool can be used on the Body and Pix fields. More information about this tool is here.
- Secondary Content (formerly labeled Pix)
- This field will fill the Photo Column of your page (provided you are using the default template for your site). However, there are exceptions. By default, your home page will show the “Secondary” content above your “Primary” content.
